Dr. Chopra is Professor of Medicine at the
University of California at Los Angeles Center for
Health Services. He is internationally
renowned for his contributions in both clinical and
basic science investigation in the field of thyroid
research. He is one of the few clinical
investigators who have developed and characterized
the metabolism of thyroid hormones, including the
deiodinative and sulfation pathways, the
developmental and non-thyroidal disease effects, and
the therapeutic implications. He has had a
major role in development of thyroid hormone
immunoassay methods, and his direct immunoassay
method remains state of the art after 25 years.
He has received numerous awards, including the
Van Meter Prize and the Parke Davis Award of the
American Thyroid Association, the highest awards of
that association. Dr Chopra was elected to
Fellowship in the American College of Physicians in
1973. He was elected to Mastership of the
American College of Physicians in 1997.
Dr. Chopra is a master teacher and has
trained many fellows who have gone on to become
professors of medicine. Through his research
background and clinical experience he has also
developed extraordinary skill in transferring
research concepts and insights to his clinical
teaching activities and the patient bedside.
He is a superb role model to medical students,
fellows, and junior faculty.
